چکیده

Parallel alignment of nanotubes can be obtained by dispersion in a self-organizing anisotropic fluid such as a nematic liquid crystal. Exploiting the cooperative reorientation of liquid crystals, the overall direction of the nanotube alignment can be controlled both statically and dynamically by the application of external fields. These can be electric, magnetic, mechanic, or even optic in nature. Employing multiwall as well as single-wall carbon nanotubes, we show their parallel alignment along a uniform liquid crystal director field and electrically verify their reorientation behavior for two complementary geometries. These demonstrate electrically controlled carbon nanotube OFF– ON and ON–OFF switches. Further applicational potential will be outlined. © 2005 American Institute of Physics. fDOI: 10.1063/1.1850606g

Dispersions of multi-wall carbon nanotubes in ferroelectric liquid crystals.

The electro-optic and dielectric properties of ferroelectric liquid crystal-multi-wall carbon nanotube dispersions were investigated with respect to temperature and nanotube concentration. The main physical properties, such as tilt angle, spontaneous polarization, response time, viscosity, and Goldstone-mode relaxation strength and frequency were studied. While all dispersions exhibit the expec...

Characterization of carbon nanotube--thermotropic nematic liquid crystal composites

Dispersions of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in liquid crystals (LCs) have attracted attention due to their unique properties and possible applications in photonics and electronics. However, these are hard to stabilize, and the loading level in the equilibrium state in LC hosts is small. A practical way to monitor the quality and CNT incorporation in such equilibrium dispersions is required. Here, we...

Analysis of stability of nanotube dispersions using surface tension isotherms.

In this paper, we present the analyses of surface tension of surfactant-stabilized dispersions of carbon nanotubes. This method allows one to study interactions of carbon nanotubes with surfactants at different levels of nanotube loading when optical methods fall short in quantifying the level of nanotube separation. Sodium dodecyl sulfate was used as a stabilizing agent to uniformly disperse s...

Optical phase modulation using a hybrid carbon nanotube-liquid-crystal nanophotonic device.

The carbon nanotube-liquid-crystal (CNT-LC) nanophotonic device is a class of device based on the hybrid combination of a sparse array of multiwall carbon nanotube electrodes grown on a silicon surface in a liquid-crystal cell. The multiwall carbon nanotubes act as individual electrode sites that spawn an electric-field profile, dictating the refractive index profile within the liquid crystal a...

Carbon Nanotube-Reinforced Thermotropic Liquid Crystal Polymer Nanocomposites

This paper focuses on the fabrication via simple melt blending of thermotropic liquid crystal polyester (TLCP) nanocomposites reinforced with a very small quantity of modified carbon nanotube (CNT) and the unique effects of the modified CNT on the physical properties of the nanocomposites. The thermal, mechanical, and rheological properties of modified CNT-reinforced TLCP nanocomposites are hig...
